Roulette odds chart: seven bets at a glance

A roulette odds chart sets each bet beside the pockets it covers, what it pays and how often it should win. The chart below uses a single-zero wheel of 37 pockets and the minimum payout odds that Massachusetts publishes in its roulette rules, as a named example. A live table’s own rules screen decides the payouts actually in force.

Roulette bets, one by one

Each entry names the bet, what it covers and one figure. The order matches the table.

  1. Straight. One number, 1 of 37 pockets. It pays 35 to 1 and is 36 to 1 against.
  2. Split. Two adjacent layout numbers, 2 of 37. It pays 17 to 1 against true odds of 35 to 2.
  3. Three numbers. A row of three, 3 of 37. It pays 11 to 1 and is 34 to 3 against.
  4. Four numbers. A corner of four, 4 of 37. It pays 8 to 1 and is 33 to 4 against.
  5. Six numbers. Two rows, 6 of 37. It pays 5 to 1 and is 31 to 6 against.
  6. Column or dozen. Twelve numbers, 12 of 37. It pays 2 to 1 and is 25 to 12 against.
  7. Even-money bets. Red, black, odd, even, 1 to 18 or 19 to 36: 18 of 37. They pay 1 to 1 and are 19 to 18 against.

Massachusetts also lists a First Five bet at 6 to 1, but it exists only on a double-zero layout, so it has no place on a single-zero chart.

Roulette odds: how the payout and the true odds differ

True odds against a bet covering n numbers on a 37-pocket wheel are (37 minus n) to n. A straight number is therefore 36 to 1 against, but the table pays 35 to 1. That one unit is the same on every row of the chart.

The working shows it. A bet on n numbers wins n times in 37 and returns payout plus 1 units each time, so the average return is (n ÷ 37) × (payout + 1). For a straight number that is (1 ÷ 37) × 36 = 36 ÷ 37; for red it is (18 ÷ 37) × 2 = 36 ÷ 37. Every bet on the chart returns 36 units per 37 staked, a shortfall of 1 ÷ 37 = 2.70%.

Three steps give the same answer for any row:

  1. Divide the numbers covered by 37 to get the share of pockets.
  2. Multiply that share by the payout plus 1.
  3. Subtract the result from 1 to read the shortfall.

A labelled example: ₱100 on a straight number returns ₱97.30 on average, and so does ₱100 on red. The difference is only in how the returns arrive, rarely and large, or often and small.

Two rules at the live tables move the figure. At a table using La Partage, a zero returns half of an even-money stake, so the shortfall on those bets becomes (1 ÷ 37) ÷ 2 = 1.35%. Lightning Roulette multiplies a Straight Up bet by between 50x and 500x on the Lucky Numbers struck each round, as Evolution’s page states it.

Reading the payout list on a live table

Every table’s rules screen prints its own payout list, so check three lines before staking.

Problem

The payout list on a table shows a lower number than this chart

Fix

Trust the table’s own screen. The chart here is a named example, so a lower payout on the screen means a larger shortfall than 2.70%, and you can find it with the working above.

Next, read how the bets behave across other games. The sic bo table counts its bets over 216 outcomes, and a baccarat betting system shows what staking patterns can and cannot do. The Evo live pillar lists every table family, and game weighting meaning explains why a terms page can count a roulette round at a different rate from a slot spin.

FAQ

What is the difference between payout odds and true odds?

The payout is what the table pays on a win. True odds are the chance against the bet on the wheel: for a bet covering n of 37 pockets, they are (37 minus n) to n. The payout sits below the true odds, and the gap is what the zero costs.

Which roulette bet has the best odds?

The even-money bets cover the most pockets, 18 of 37, so they win most often, at 48.65% of rounds. They pay 1 to 1. A straight number wins 2.70% of rounds and pays 35 to 1. Every bet on the chart has the same 1 in 37 shortfall.

Does La Partage change the roulette odds?

On an even-money bet at a table that uses it, a zero returns half the stake. Evolution's French Roulette page states the rule. The working is (1 ÷ 37) ÷ 2 = 1.35% on those bets.

Where do I find the payouts of a live table?

Open the table's rules screen and read its payout list. This chart uses the minimum payouts Massachusetts publishes as a named example.
